Former Fairfield Country Club to undergo transformation

A developer has purchased the property and hopes to have it complete by October

WINNSBORO, S.C. — The once-vibrant Fairfield Country Club in Winnsboro is poised for a revival as developer Webb Yongue plans to transform the property.

With its picturesque surroundings and expansive 64 acres, Yongue envisions transforming the site into an upscale restaurant, boutique hotel, and premier event venue.

"It just seems appropriate with the beauty of the house, the beauty of the property," Yongue remarked. Adding, "We will do an upscale restaurant also we plan to build a roughly 2500 square foot pavilion on the back of the property."

The Fairfield Country Club holds a significant place in the community's history, having served as a central hub for social activities.

Pelham Lyles, a historian at the Fairfield County Museum, fondly recalls its heyday as "I spent many a day in the pool and on the tennis courts there and it just, ya know, it was the heart of what was going on in the town. The ladies and gentlemen who golfed practically lived there all the time, it was just the place to be, so when it closed it was a sad thing."

Yongue's revitalization efforts extend beyond the country club; he recently acquired the Wells Fargo building downtown for another ambitious project, that will welcome four apartments on the top floor and a restaurant on the bottom.

"It means a lot to me to see the town grow it's caught a lot of bad breaks over the years with Mack truck leaving town and the VC Summer Plant, but the SCOUT plant coming to town, this is really a good chance for Winnsboro to catch some growth," Yongue said.

He hopes to have the project completed by October.
