Gibson Pond Park to temporarily close for dam reconstruction

The Town of Lexington hopes to have the dam rebuilt by the Fall of this year.

LEXINGTON, S.C. — The Gibson Pond Park in Lexington will be temporarily closing in January as construction starts to rebuild a dam that was affected by the October Floods of 2015.

The pond has been out since that time and hasn't looked the same since.

The Town of Lexington announced last year in the State of the Town address they would be working to rebuild the dam. Plans were submitted to FEMA for approval.

75 percent of the project for the public park project will be paid by FEMA and the town will take care of the remaining 25 percent.

The total cost of the project to fix the Gibson Pond Dam willf be around $5 million.

Back in October, Town of Lexington spokesperson Laurin Barnes told Street Squad, "It will be great. It's a great park and so with a pond it's even better. We're really looking forward to it being like it was."

The town says the goal is to have the dam back open by Fall of this year.
