GILBERT, S.C. — An archery team is providing opportunities for all students.
Gilbert Archery, which was established in 2014, consists of over 40 students ranging from the ages of 5-17.
Levi Vasquez, an 11-year-old student on the team that has Down Syndrome, currently competes on the team's middle school division team.
Ricky Ward, head coach of Gilbert Archery, says Levi is an inspiration to the team.
"Levi is a blessing, we decided to put him on the team this year and for him to even stand up there and do what he does it melts your heart.” Coach Ward said.
Coach Ward also says that archery is a great sports for kids because athleticism isn't a requirement.
"It’s 95% mental, 5% physical and it’s for the kids who are not physical, that can’t get out and play football, and basketball. It’s kind of an all-around sport that you have to use your mind in,” Coach Ward said.
Gilbert is one of several archery teams based in Lexington County. Others include White Knoll and Lexington High School.
