IRMO, S.C. — If you've been out to the Irmo Community Park lately, you've probably noticed a lot of yellow tape. That's because it's going through several renovations.
The park, a staple for many locals and their kids, saw over 750 people at the town's most recent trunk-or-treat event.
The green space is seeing some new colors - particularly yellow and orange in construction tape and cones.
Town Administrator Courtney Dennis explains the 10-year-old park is getting a facelift.
"The wood is starting to show a little age, so we're re-staining the shelters. The bridges over the little creek here are being replaced with new boards, making sure they're safe," Dennis said.
Dennis said the town is also fixing broken sidewalk pieces, they're repainting buildings and planting winter grass seed.
"We've got water that's shedding off the property near the playground and so it's creating some wash out areas, so we're going to find a way to divert some of that water around the playground and install some new pipes to help drain that," Dennis said.
In total, Dennis said everything should cost about $150,000. The town is coordinating with park staff to make sure there's no overlap with work being done and planned events.
Dennis said some sections will be closed down for this work, but overall, the park is still open.
The town said all of these upgrades to the Irmo Community Park should be finished by mid-December.
Local leaders say once these upgrades are done, they'll reassess to make sure nothing else needs fixing.
