IRMO, S.C. — The Town of Irmo is getting a new clock on the corner of Lake Murray Boulevard and Woodrow Street. The 13 foot tall, 36 inch wide 1890-style clock will soon sit at one of the busiest corners in town. But it's rather the making of this clock that's unifying the town.
"The clock will be facing up and down Lake Murray Boulevard," Bill Danielson, Irmo mayor said.
A new big clock is on its way.
"We do want to keep that South Carolina, that local charm, that small town charm, especially right by the railroad tracks here, which is the heart of Irmo," Danielson said.
But it's the uniting of Irmo residents that made this clock's existence at all possible. Done by donations of the installation, and the land for the town to use the next 99 years in only paying $1.
"We're fortunate to have a bunch of good neighbors and good residents here in Irmo to do that," Danielson said.
The Irmo Future Growth Corporation chairman, and local entrepreneur, Beach Loveland said linking up these plans for a town clock have been underway since last summer.
"It brings a sense of unity together in the town, which is kind of already there, but we're just raising it to the surface a little bit more," Loveland said.
Dialing in this Lexington County town a few ticks more.
"They're very friendly. There's a lot of camaraderie," Sadie Grinnell, Irmo resident said.
Maybe even binding more to Irmo.
"I think it'll attract people more to our town and the history behind Irmo," Grinnell said.
According to the mayor, the clock is expected to be installed in the next 30 - 60 days, and there will be a ceremony too for its installation.
