Failure to report move disqualifies Irmo town council candidate, officials say

Candidate did not update his address in time after moving to Lexington County

IRMO, S.C. — Early voting started Monday for municipal elections across South Carolina.

In Lexington County, a candidate for Irmo Town Council has been disqualified because he failed to update his home address in time after moving from Richland County into Lexington County.

South Carolina's Constitution says a person wishing to run for a municipal office must have resided within that municipality for six months and registered to vote in that municipality 30 days preceding the election.

George Frazier was disqualified as a candidate after he failed to report his change of address within the time allotted.

Lexington County Election officials say that due to the timeline of building the election -- creating the ballot and programming voting stations -- it is past the 48th day deadline to have Frazier's name removed from the ballot. However, a notice has been posted stating the disqualification of Frazier as a candidate.

Of the remaining candidates -- Jeff Allen, Phyllis Coleman, Gabriel Penfield, and Erik Sickinger -- two candidates will be chosen to fill the two empty town council seats.
