IRMO, S.C. — Officer Chris Kaderly says 90 percent of car seats are installed incorrectly. That's why he and his officers spent Thursday making sure parents knew the right way.
The Irmo officer took us through the checklist of how officers evaluate safety seats. First, they go through a "Child Passenger Safety Checklist," which is also verified by DHEC. They evaluate the seat as it comes to them, and then take it out to make sure it is not expired or that there is not any recalls on it.
"We would encourage them to come to the police department or any inspection station to get it checked by a technician," Kaderly advised. "That way if they have any questions they can ask and we can give them the correct answer and we can show them how to install it correctly."
Kaderly and others who are certified to check car seat safety go through a days-long course and have training on how to correctly install four different types of seats.
Anyone can come by the Irmo Police Department to get their car seat looked at, just make an appointment ahead of time.
