KERSHAW COUNTY, S.C. — According to readings from the U.S. Geological Survey, the Elgin area felt the rumbles of a small earthquake on Friday for the first time in months.

The magnitude 2.3 earthquake registered in the same general area that has been the focus of earthquakes in recent years—just off of I-20 in the Lugoff-Elgin area of the county. However, this particular earthquake was the first one recorded by seismographs in several months. The last earthquake listed, with a magnitude of 2.2, happened on March 27 and was one of multiple felt over that month but nowhere near as many as were felt years earlier.

Magnitudes below 2.5 are generally hard for people to feel but are still recorded by earthquake monitoring equipment. People in the general area sometimes still report feeling them. In the case of Friday's earthquake, the USGS reports that just over 50 people claimed they felt the earthquake.
