I-20 Construction in Kershaw County to last through 2027

SCDOT will be tearing down 2 bridges over the Wateree River and building a new one.

KERSHAW COUNTY, S.C. — Pack your patience if you're driving on I-20 through Kershaw County because it will take several years to complete the project.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is working on a multi-year bridge project over the Wateree River, causing significant delays for drivers.

“It is a little aggravating having the traffic pile up and having to stay in one lane,” said  Kershaw County resident Sueann Larocque.

Candace Anderson, another resident, echoed the frustration. “I definitely avoid it. I definitely avoid it. It’s ridiculous. You’re definitely gonna sit in traffic for a good 30 minutes to an hour.”

Jason Fulmer, the district construction engineer for SCDOT, outlined the four phases of the project.

“We’re going to build a new bridge directly center where we’re looking right now,” Fulmer said.

Phase 1: Currently underway, involves building a bridge between the eastbound and westbound lanes, expected to be completed by June 2025. Temporary lane closures will continue both ways through this stage.

Phase 2: Starting in June 2025 and lasting until June 2026, SCDOT will shift I-20 westbound traffic to the new bridge and begin the demolition of the current I-20 westbound bridge. The new bridge will be widened to accommodate the updated westbound lanes, with temporary lane closures continuing.

Phase 3: From June 2026 to July 2027, SCDOT will shift both westbound and eastbound traffic onto the new bridge, followed by the demolition and widening of the current eastbound bridge.

Final Phase: Will take several months to complete guardrails, cable barriers, and earthwork, wrapping up by September 2027.

Despite the anticipated long duration, some residents like Anderson see the potential benefits. “I think it will be a pain, but it will be worth it,” she said.

SCDOT also plans to rehabilitate two additional bridges along I-20 near Camden.
