CAMDEN, S.C. — State agents are investigating the death of a murder suspect who was found in his cell at the Kershaw County Detention Center the day his trial was set to conclude.
The Fifth Circuit Solicitor's Office announced that Corey Perrine was found dead just after midnight on Friday. Perrine was charged with the 2019 murder of Cletis Edward Baker, and his case was taken to trial on Jan. 9 at the Kershaw County Courthouse. Officials expected the trial to conclude on Friday.
Baker's body was found dumped along Damascus Church Road near Flatrock Road in September 2019. At least five other people were also charged in connection with his death.
No details about the cause or manner of Perrine's death have been released, but an autopsy was scheduled for 11 a.m.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is leading the death investigation.
