KERSHAW COUNTY, S.C. — Following a Saturday earthquake in Kershaw County, yet another occurred Sunday afternoon, and dozens of people reported feeling it.
The latest earthquake occurred around 6 p.m. and had an estimated magnitude of 2.4. According to initial projections from the U.S. Geological Survey, it was centered off Green Hill Road west of Whiting Way and I-20. As of 6:40 p.m., roughly 160 people had reported feeling the rumble.
The general area near Lugoff and Elgin is no stranger to earthquakes. Nine others were reported there in 2024, including the magnitude 2.1 that occurred near Doby's Mill Elementary School on Saturday around 2:46 p.m.
Compared to 2022, which saw about 80 earthquakes in that region alone, 2024 has been relatively calm. The largest earthquake of 2024 was of magnitude 2.7 and happened on March 9.
