New women's health center breaks ground in Camden

The site will provide specialists in obstetrics and gynecology.

CAMDEN, S.C. — Access to women’s healthcare in Kershaw County is set to improve as construction has begun on a new state-of-the-art facility.

The MUSC Health Camden Pavilion, a 14,000-square-foot women’s health center, broke ground on Thursday morning and is slated for completion by the spring of 2025.

“Here with the largest construction project to date for M US C Health in the Midlands. We're excited about it,” said Dr. Tallulah Holmstrom, Chief Medical Officer for MUSC Health Kershaw.

The center, located at the corner of Battleship Road and DeKalb Street in Camden, will offer obstetrics, gynecology, and advanced imaging services, including 3D mammograms and ultrasounds.

“This is going to give us the physical space where we can treat our women throughout the county. It will also give us not just the space but it will give us the providers, the physicians, the nurse practitioners, and the equipment to give easy access to state-of-the-art screening care for women of all ages.," she adds.

State Senator Penry Gustafson, attended the groundbreaking, and emphasized the center's importance, especially for rural areas, noting the recent changes in medical care across the county.

"Right here in the county where we need women's services, so people don't have to drive to Columbia or Greenville or Florence. They can stay right here at home, what they need. It's just going to serve a purpose so important in this community since we've had some services change at our local hospital. In other words, they've been reduced or eliminated," Gustafson says.

Residents in the area say they are thrilled about the addition of women's services.

“Yes, I do think it's a good idea because we need more women's services," says Faith White a Camden resident.

Construction is expected to be completed by April 2025.
