KERSHAW COUNTY, S.C. — Residents want more safety measures for drivers coming up to a stop sign at the intersection of Porter and Providence roads in Cassatt after seeing multiple accidents.
"It's just a dangerous crossroad," said Larry Brazell, who's lived there for 50 years.
Brazell and other residents said they want to see changes to the area after growing tired of the accidents they've seen.
"I sit on the front porch a lot, and I see everything. I see them running the stop sign," Brazell said. "I've seen cars totaled, people badly injured; it's just been a dangerous intersection for 50-something years."
The South Carolina Highway Patrol, which responds to accidents at the Kershaw County intersection, said that there have been 10 collisions injuring eight people there since 2018.
Brazell and Wendy Baker said they think something needs to be done.
"I'd like to see them put bigger stop signs up with reflector tape on them; we've got no stop ahead signs anywhere, Brazell said. "I mean, it would just help, especially for the people who don't live around here."
"A crosslight up there, or a four-way stop or something like that, or the bumps to let you know there is a stop sign," Baker added.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation, which maintains these two roads, said drivers and residents with issues should request road maintenance work at the department's Maintenance Work Request website.
