LEXINGTON, S.C. — Lexington County School District One announced they’re looking into a site to relocate Lexington Middle School.
The school’s current location off North Lake Drive is just over a mile from the location the district is looking into at this time. The land is right off of Old Cherokee Road and Cherokee Trail.
Lexington County School District One said in a statement:
“The district will enter into two separate option agreements to begin the land acquisition process for a new Lexington Middle School site. Each option agreement includes two parcels of land. The district intends to acquire all four parcels of land. In fact, the purchases are contingent upon all four parcels closing at the same time.”
The school district says the board accepted the administration’s proposal and will now begin the due diligence process before purchasing the properties.

“The first thing district administrators do when looking at a piece of land is to determine the location of the land,” said the district. “Does the location of the property meet the district’s current and future needs for property in that area?”
Lexington School District One says this is all a part of the voters decision on November 6, 2018, to move forward with the $365 million 5-year building plan.
While going through the process, the district says they’ll be turning to the South Carolina Department of Education, South Carolina Department of Transportation and Lexington County guidelines before they purchase anything.
“They consider whether the South Carolina Department of Transportation would approve the available road frontage, the depth of the property and the ability to provide necessary traffic circulation on site for the stacking of automobiles during peak student drop-off and pick-up times,” said the school district.
Some people in the community tell Street Squad they’re concerned about a school being placed off Old Cherokee Road because of traffic. They feel it will cause a lot of issues for those who travel through this area daily.
The district says they have a site available for parents and those wanting to keep up with the process of relocating Lexington Middle.
