Pedestrian who died after being struck three times in Lexington County road identified

Robert W. Barrs, 74, was struck by three vehicles in Lexington County. Surveillance shows more than 30 cars passed before one driver stopped to call for help.

LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — A 74-year-old man is dead after being struck three times on a Lexington County road on Thursday evening, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Now, we know his name.

Troopers say the crashes happened around 7:17 p.m. Thursday on US 178 near Washboard Road, three miles north of Pelion.

According to troopers, an unknown vehicle traveling west on US 178 struck a pedestrian, later identified as 74-year-old Robert W. Barrs of Pelion. The driver then left the scene. Officials said a second unknown vehicle traveling east on US 178 struck the pedestrian and left the scene. A 2009 Chevrolet sedan traveling east then struck the pedestrian a third time.

The Lexington County Coroner's Office said that surveillance video showed more than 30 vehicles drove past Barrs before one driver stopped and called 911 around 7:36 p.m. The pedestrian died at the scene, according to officials. 

The incident remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
