SPRINGDALE, S.C. — With a new summer camp coming to the Springdale Police Department, the officers needed some help from the community.
Officer Sandy Harrelson said she was talking to a Springdale parent one day and was made aware that there are not many summer activities for kids in their town. That's when she got the idea for Little Exploring Officers Summer Camp-Summer in Springdale.
"I hope to continue it every summer," Harrelson told us."I think that it gives the children something fun to do, but also while they're learning and learning how to be a good friend, be a good neighbor and grow up to be a successful part of our community."
The children participating in this summer camp will receive matching T-shirts and Officer Harrelson needed some help designing them.
"I am the school resource officer at Springdale Elementary and I think its really important to get kids involved as much as you can in every process and every step along the way," she said. "So I thought it would be really cool if they could help me design our t-shirt."
Officer Harrelson shared a Facebook post looking for entries and had several replies with artwork. Some of the officers, along with the new chief of police Andrew Richbourg, looked at all of the artwork and picked out the winner, Ella Crawford.
Crawford just finished the 5th grade at Springdale Elementary.
"I thought about what police officers would use on a daily basis when they're going out," Crawford said. "She said seeing all of the kids in her t-shirt design is going to make her "happy."
The summer camp is all full this year, but you can keep up with the Springdale Police Department on their Facebook page for information on other activities.
