South Carolina non-profit cares for unwanted, neglected parrots

Majestic Wings Rescue came about after two local women realized birds needed a safe place to land.

CASSATT, S.C. — Parrots can be loud, talkative, and full of personality.

Majestic Wings Rescue in Cassatt came about after two local women realized birds needed a safe place to land.

"We started taking on parrots because I actually had some birds, and then there was a need for a place for birds to go because not a lot of people do this kind of work," Director of Majestic Wings Rescue Audrey Musso said.

Musso says these birds can live a long life, which also makes it hard for people to keep them.

"We need a place for the birds to go because some of them can live to be 50, 60, 70, 80 years," Musso said.

"When they first come in, we kinda just get them kinda set up in their spot in the cage, and then we just let them decompress because it can take a couple of weeks for them to decompress," Musso said. "We feed them and offer them treats, and we interact with them on a one-to-one basis."

So Sheila got to spend the day outside and she had a shower, her nails were trimmed yesterday. After she is cleared medically and microchipped we will accept applications for adoption.

They currently have 41 birds the most, they've ever had, with several up for adoption and room to accept more, but they want those at home to know while the birds can be full of colors and personality, if you decide you want one, picking the right one is important.

"They need to research if they gonna adopt at all," Musso said. "They need to know about the bird, what the bird eats, how it lives, what things to look for if they get sick."

Their biggest word of advice is you don't pick the bird, it picks you.
