LEXINGTON, S.C. — Lexington-Richland School District Five has announced an additional opportunity to get your child into schools that were affected by an enrollment freeze.
Back in May, the school district announced a lottery system where students affected by the current enrollment freeze may be able to go Lake Murray or Chapin Elementary Schools.
The lottery will impact students for the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years.
Lexington-Richland School District Five says they implemented the freeze to limit class sizes and not overload classroom instruction.
The school district sent out a release on Tuesday announcing they will, “offer an additional lottery selection process for available seats,” at the two schools for the next school year.
At the June 24th School Board meeting, the district was given a detailed report on the lottery system that previously started at the beginning of June.
The district said in the release, “The new lottery opportunity, which was detailed at the June 24 School Board meeting, will capture all other students/families not impacted by Phase I or Phase II of the enrollment freeze and zoned for Chapin Elementary and Lake Murray Elementary schools.”
The new lottery opportunity will allow students who are zoned for Chapin Elementary and Lake Murray Elementary schools that are homeschooled, attend a charter school, or have moved after the freeze was implemented to now enter the lottery.
Since the lottery process started, 27 seats have been filled. 44% of students decided to remain at the school they currently attend.
School District Five Superintendent Dr. Christina Melton said in the release, “We want to clearly communicate that the enrollment freeze is a temporary solution, while we continue to work towards building a new school in the Chapin area. We feel the lottery is family-friendly, student-centered and the best approach we can take to address the overcrowding that exists at these schools.”
This new application window will start at 8 am Monday, July 8th through 5 pm Thursday, July 18th.
The district says current parents will receive an email and latter. New parents to the district should contact their zoned school.
To apply for the lottery, you will need to contact the school your child currently goes to, the school your child is zoned for, or the administrations office for Lexington-Richland Five School District.
