City of Orangeburg seeking funding to fix drainage in Pine Top neighborhood

The road project will be about $1.9 million, with an additional $656,000 in drainage repairs.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — The City of Orangeburg is working on a road and drainage project in the Pine Top neighborhood. According to city officials, this is part of an effort to fix failing pavement and road structures as well as drainage issues that residents say they've been dealing with for years.

“The actual subdivision is very hilly so it also has a lot of water that comes down naturally so it’s just a combination when you don’t have enough base and enough asphalt it ends up failing," said assistant administrator John Singh.

Currently, the city is starting to do road repairs on some of the most damaged sections in order to give residents relief while driving. Singh says there are about 40 homes in the subdivision.

The city was granted ownership of the streets of the Pine Top subdivision in 1990. The plan is to eventually repair all of the roads.

“We’re committed that the city took the roads and we’ve got to get them right. But we need to make sure that we get them right and they don’t break down again," said Singh.

The road project will be about $1.9 million, with an additional $656,000 in drainage repairs.

The city is working with the homeowners association and has lived in the community for 30 years. The president of the association says rain has created severe flooding and erosion in parts of the area.

“I think the clear scientific explanation in a understandable form should be provided to the public to explain to them why this small tax is needed because nobody wants to pay a cent more for anything right, and also these are hard times," said resident Narayanachar Murali.

The goal is to start these repairs in May. Starting April 11, the city will begin accepting bids for contractors.
