Child shot in hunting accident has died, SCDNR says

Authorities said the shooting happened near the Calhoun County line.

ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. — A child has died after being shot on Friday morning during what investigators are calling an apparent deer hunting accident in Orangeburg County.

A spokesperson for the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources said the incident happened near Whisperwood Road and the Calhoun County border.

Few details are available at this point, but investigators said a six-year-old was shot. On Saturday, officials confirmed that the child had died. The Orangeburg County Coroner's Office later identified the victim as Avery Davis of Orangeburg. Authorities believe the shooting was accidental based on initial reports but have not elaborated on how it occurred.
