ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities say one person is dead after a crash that happened while a driver was allegedly attempting to escape law enforcement in Orangeburg County.
Lance Corporal Lena Butler with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the crash happened around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday along U.S. 178 (Charleston Highway) near Joe S. Jeffords Road. Butler said the crash involved a Dodge Charger heading north on Charleston Highway when it left the side of the road and struck a signpost.
The driver was taken by helicopter to an area hospital, and emergency medical services took the passenger. The passenger later died.
Butler directed questions about the pursuit to the Orangeburg Department of Public Safety and deferred questions about the identity of the victims to the Orangeburg County Coroner's Office.
