9-year-old girl dies in Orangeburg crash that killed four people

A 9-year-old child was among four victims killed in the crash on Tuesday.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Authorities have identified the four people killed in a traffic accident Tuesday in Orangeburg County. One of the victims was just 9-years-old.

Tryphena Carr, 31 and Ariyana Lawton, 9, both of St. Matthews and Dennis Crosby, 65, and Regina Lyons, 59, both of Cordova were killed in the accident along US-21, according to Orangeburg County Coroner Samuetta Marshall.

Troopers with South Carolina Highway Patrol said the accident happened around 7:46 am Tuesday on US-21 at Waterspring Road, just about four miles north of Orangeburg.

"The initial call was in reference to multiple collision, a multiple vehicle collision on Columbia Road with one possible rejection and with fire," said Battalion Chief Jonathan Winningham with the Orangeburg Fire Service. "The call initially came in from a volunteer assistant fire chief, who was actually involved in the collision as well, so we got to call pretty quickly."

Troopers said the driver of a pickup truck and a Nissan were traveling north on US-21. An Audi, which was traveling south on US 21, collided with the Nissan Murano. The pickup truck then collided with the Murano, as well.

The Audi and the Nissan Murano both had two occupants, and all four died at the scene, according to troopers. The one occupant of the pickup truck was not injured.

On Wednesday, the Orangeburg Chick-fil-A put up a memorial for Carr and Lawton where community members could write condolences to their family.

The accident remains under investigation by South Carolina Highway Patrol.
