Orangeburg police working to solve murder of 31-year-old man

31-year-old Shaquille Swinton of Orangeburg died from his wounds.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — The Orangeburg Department of Public Safety is investigating after a man was shot to death over the weekend.

On Saturday, DPS officers responded to a call about a man who was injured behind the Walgreens on John C. Calhoun Drive.

According to the incident report, officers believed he was bleeding from a gunshot wound.

The man, later identified as 31-year-old Shaquille Swinton of Orangeburg, died from his wounds.

Swinton's aunt, Dorothy Payne, says he will be missed very much by his family.

“I would describe him as a very sweet person, anything he can do for you he would do it," Payne said. “I just don’t know, can't make sense of it. I didn’t sleep last night and this morning, and I don’t know how it is ... that’s a life, and I hope whoever did it be caught.”

Payne also said she hopes this doesn't happen to other families.

“Praying that it will change, that’s all I can say, and I think other parents and people want the same thing, you know," Payne said. "But, it’s a great loss, especially with me because that’s my sister's baby.”

Orangeburg Police Chief Charles Austin says they have a person of interest in the case and the investigation is still ongoing.

“Well, at this time, we’re still trying to collect information that will help us better determine what accurately happened," Austin said. "The incident was reported to us, there was a person believed to be lying behind Walgreens on Broughton Street. Our officers responded. We’re still collecting information. It's an active ongoing investigation.”
