One person wounded in Vance area shooting after family's search for missing daughter

Authorities said one person was shot while helping the family search for a woman's missing daughter.

ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. — A family's search for a missing daughter ended in a vehicle crash, a person shot, and other violence on Tuesday morning, a recently filed incident report states.

The Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to the 300 block of Olin Road just after midnight and spoke with a woman who said the family had gone looking for her daughter. The woman stated they found the daughter down the street with a 19-year-old man. The mother said the man then sped away in a vehicle and crashed in a ditch not far away.

The mother said her family got out of their vehicle and attempted to get the crashed vehicle's doors open, at which point she said the man got out and fired shots at one of the people involved in the search. She said the victim was shot multiple times and taken to the Medical University of South Carolina Orangeburg by family members.

The mother said the man ran down Olin Road toward Pineland, and she went to get the daughter out of the vehicle. However, she allegedly refused to get out, so the mother followed the man until he reportedly fired shots at her feet.

Deputies attempted to speak with the daughter but said she was not cooperative and allegedly acted like she would run more than once. In the incident report, deputies said they took her to the back of a marked patrol vehicle.

The deputies took a phone that allegedly belonged to the man but said the daughter became combative when they told her to get out of the patrol vehicle and give them another phone she had. The incident report states she began to swipe and kick at the deputies.

The incident report said the mother arrived and sat on top of the daughter and "began hitting her to get her to listen." The report stated that deputies had to ask the mother to move several times before she did so. At this point, deputies said they handcuffed the daughter and placed her back in a patrol car.

Authorities never noted specific charges against the 19-year-old man as the investigation continues, nor does the report suggest whether or not he was taken into custody. The sheriff's office classified the incident as an aggravated assault in the report.
