ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. — Orangeburg County Council plans on borrowing $10 million for projects and equipment that would benefit the area.
Officials expect issue bonds to raise funds to purchase new vehicles for the county’s Sheriff’s Office and administration departments.
Harold Young is the Orangeburg County administrator. He says the allocation of funds are taken seriously.
“We go through a competitive process. All the projects will be vetted out to make sure we get the best price and the best cost for the citizens of Orangeburg County,” said Young. “Also from that standpoint that any debt that we do, it’s not taken lightly. We understand the impacts to the debt.”
$1.8 million of those funds will go towards the renovation and expansion of the new Orangeburg County Council on Aging building, something Young says is necessary.
“It’s an excellent facility,” said Young. “Long overdue. They needed some place that was in better shape.”

Dee Anne Miller is the executive director at the Orangeburg County Council on Aging. She says this new facility will be a big improvement.
“It’s been a long time and it hasn’t been remodeled, and it has some health hazards, some leaks and things of that sorts,” said Miller. “So, we’re very grateful to have a new building to go to.”
Miller says the County Council on Aging provides many resources to seniors in the community.
“When seniors get out of the home and exercise and learn these things its proven to keep them from disease and it teaching them prevention of things,” said Miller. “And so it keeps them in their own homes and independent which saves everybody money.”
The County Council on Aging is hoping to be moved in to their new facility before the end of the summer.
