ORANGEBURG, S.C. — On Tuesday evening, both Claflin University and South Carolina State University presidents met with student leaders about safety on both campuses after a shooting in an academic building on South Carolina State University campus happened earlier in the day.
Reports of a shooting in a South Carolina State academic building led both Claflin University and South Carolina State to an all-campus lockdown on Tuesday. Lockdown on South Carolina State University’s campus lasted an hour.
South Carolina State says there were no injuries and Claflin said one SC State student who fled to safety on their campus suffered minor injuries.
Kameron McAllister, a student at SC State, says he didn’t initially know that the campus was on lockdown. “At first I was confused because I didn’t know we were on lockdown. I didn’t know until after the fact that it was over with that we were on lockdown.”
SC State student Kierra Jenkins says she is praying for everyone’s wellbeing. “I hope security continues to do their jo and SC State continues to keep students safe and stuff, that’s all I can pray and hope for.”
Montez Wiggins is a student at SC State. He says having guns on campus is not the answer. “I think it’s too many people have them. I mean a part of me feels like some of these students don’t feel safe, that’s why they carry guns here, but you know, I just don’t feel like it’s the answer.”
The Orangeburg Department of Public Safety has charged 19-year-old Rolando Ifill, a SC State sophomore, with carrying a firearm on school property and further charges are pending
SLED is assisting SC State campus police with the ongoing investigation.
