SC State requires ID upon entry

Anyone who comes on South Carolina State University campus is required to show identification at their gates.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — In an effort to keep campus safe, anyone who now enters the gates at South Carolina State University has to show some form of identification.

Students like Mary Elizabeth Ladner say they are excited to see the change.

“I feel like safety is a big part of this campus and its not really enforced enough and I feel like this could really help us be safe in this community that we are in now,” said Ladner. “I feel like it’s going to help a lot safety wise only because people bring random people and majority of the time when we have things going on on campus it be people that don’t go to school here so I feel like that should help a lot.”

SC State’s President, Alexander Conyers sent an email to the school on Monday morning reminding students of their safety practices on and off campus.

Practices include walking in pairs and groups, never letting strangers into rooms, locking doors, windows, and vehicles, not lending student id’s to others and more.

Stanley Cheeseboro is a junior at SC State. He says people who do not belong on campus should not be permitted.

“People get on campus that maybe shouldn’t be there and stuff like that which can cause some problems,” said Cheeseboro. “I think the policy’s good its not you know too much they’re just saying have your ID like show you go here. I feel like that’s fair.”

Junior I’Yawni James says this new safety protocol is important for out of state students as well.

“They’re doing it to make sure it to make sure we have a better community with in the school you know campus a lot of people from South Carolina State is not from South Carolina they are from other cities and states so basically they’re doing that to keep us safe and sound.”

Earlier this year, the school added a gun sniffing dog to the campus.
