Senior Games are back in Orangeburg

Activities continue on Thursday at 10 am with basketball, cornhole, horseshoes and more.

ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. — Seniors in the community gathered at the Orangeburg County Council on Aging to put their athletic abilities to the test on Wednesday.

Day One of the Senior Games included bingo, a cake walk, discus throw, shot put and speed walking.

Marty Kinard is the Orangeburg Parks and Recreation deputy director and says including seniors is a priority.

“The quality of life is important to us, you know? We have a lot of events for our youth but doing something for our seniors was important to us and, you know, we don’t have a lot of events throughout the year, so doing senior games every year and coming out here getting them active was very very important to us."

Grace King said she participated this year in hopes of meeting new friends.

“I came out to fellowship with the seniors so I could be able to meet and greet new people and fellowship and have fun,” said King.

King says in addition to friendships, keeping busy is good.

“We’re not too old that we can't interact and have activities,’ said King. “And when we have activities, it means that we’re moving and grooving, and our heart is beating and it's good exercise.”

“Corn hole. Corn hole, I like horseshoes to but corn hole is one of my favorites,” said participant Betty Singleton.

Senior Games continues on Thursday at 10 am with basketball, cornhole, horseshoes and more.
