ORANGEBURG, S.C. — South Carolina State University has arrested a member of the football team who they say had a gun on campus.
The school's campus police says it charged Ja'Quan Toney with carrying or displaying firearms in public buildings or adjacent areas.
The charges come after an incident that took place at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. The school said the campus police chief, Timothy Taylor, and two other officers saw Toney with a handgun in a common area at a campus residence hall.
The police took him to the Orangeburg County Detention Center for booking.
Officers say Tony was a member of the football team at the time of his arrest and now is no longer on the active roster. They say he is still enrolled at the school.
