ORANGEBURG, S.C. — On Saturday, deputies say a woman was shot in her car. The victim was looking to buy a home in the Brookdale neighborhood near Orangeburg.
At the time, she was with a male victim who was driving the car.
As they were making a second pass of the South Briarcliff Drive home, deputies said they were shot at by unknown individuals in a nearby house.
An incident report from the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office said they drove to a nearby McDonald’s.
When they got there, they realized they had bullet holes in the car - one on the hood near the driver’s side door frame and one near the driver's side front fender.
Neither were injured.
Linda Reid grew up in the Brookdale neighborhood, just one street from where the incident occurred. She says she is shocked.
“This neighborhood was nothing like that. It was a safe neighborhood. We could just anytime of the night or day, we could just feel free," Reid said. "And for me to hear what happened the other day, it was just shocking to me.”
Reid says something needs to be done, as the incident took place across from Brookdale Elementary School.
“We have a school district here so maybe us as a community could get together and address this because we definitely want safety for the school and for the kids," said Reid. "So that’s an idea, maybe we’ll try to get together and see what we can do and get the sheriff involved and his staff, and we’ll see what can happen but that’s not safe.”
The sheriff’s department is still investigating, and no arrests have been made.
Anyone with information on the case is urged to call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
