Part of Lake Murray Dam closed to traffic Sunday

From 8 am until midnight, traffic will not be able to use the upper lanes of the Lake Murray Dam coming from Lexington. Drivers will be guided to the lower level where there will be one lane going in each direction.

LEXINGTON, S.C. — The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department announced the upper level of the Lake Murray Dam will be closed, and all lanes will be rerouted to the lower level, on Sunday.

The Dining on the Dam event, held by the Lexington County Chamber of Commerce, will be taking place on the top part of the dam on North Lake Drive.

Cpt. Adam Myrick with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department says you should plan ahead for this traffic detour.

“Those lanes that are normally coming back from Irmo across the dam to Lexington, those will be closed,” said Myrick. “We’re going to reroute traffic pretty much all day on Sunday.”

From 8 a.m. until midnight, traffic won't be able to use the upper lanes of the Lake Murray Dam coming from Irmo. Drivers will be guided to the lower level, where there will be one lane going in each direction.

“We’re also asking that you understand that there may be some delays there because you’re going to have one lane of traffic going one direction, another lane going that other direction. It’s going to take some more time for people to get across the dam and get to where they need to go on either side,” said Myrick.

With the event coming to the dam, there will be a lot more foot traffic on the roadway, and Myrick says you need to make sure you’re more alert while behind the wheel.

“Just make sure you are patient, as patient as you can be. Make sure you are also as alert as you can be as you go into that area and look for those things that are there to control the traffic flow but then also the people on foot who are going and from the event between their cars as they get ready to take part in the activities on the upper level of the dam,” explained Myrick.

The sherriff’s department also wants to let you know the walkway will also be closed on the dam. Those of you who run across the Lake Murray Dam will not be able to do so because of the event.
