WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. — One Midlands organization is helping you turn your Christmas tree into something beneficial for the community.
Grinding of the Greens is a program of Keep the Midlands Beautiful (KMB) that’s been going for 13 years. Folks are able to drop off their Christmas tree at different locations in Richland and Lexington counties.
The organization expects to recycle 6,000 trees into free mulch for Midlands residents.
Laura Anne Hunt, executive director of the organization, says it really benefits the community.
“Since it’s an organic material, it’s really great for planting, for beds, and for more beautification around the community. As part of our mission being a part of the community’s beautification is essential to what we believe.”
Free mulch from the recycled trees will be available to the public beginning at 8:30 a.m. until the mulch runs out Saturday, Jan. 11, at the SC State Farmers Market (3483 Charleston Highway, West Columbia) and Seven Oaks Park (200 Leisure Lane, Columbia, near the intersection of St. Andrews and Piney Grove roads).
There are 12 drop-off locations around Lexington County and 11 locations around Richland County. Days and hours at each location varies.
Remember to remove your tree from the stand, remove lights, tinsel and ornaments, strings, wires or ties from the tree.
"Everybody can take off all the lights and everything off of their tree. Then we take those trees and mulch them... People can bring their own containers. It is free mulch but there is a suggestion of $5 per car and $10 per truck load."
Drop off trees only. Wreaths, garland and other greenery will not be accepted.
