SUMTER, S.C. — Hundreds of people filled the streets around University of South Carolina Sumter's campus in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
"It's important that we use today to do something other than laying in the bed," Terrie Wood, one of the marchers, said. "To come out and support the walk is one way to show that the dream is still alive and that we are working towards it."
Wood marched alongside others from around Sumter's community for about three miles Monday morning during the 20th-annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Dream Walk in Sumter.
"We still have a long way to go and we've got to keep marching forward," Wood said.
Togetherness is the key to making a positive change, according to Alethia Hummel, who helped plan the event.
"Coming together as a community as one to celebrate freedom, you know? That's the theme of this year's walk is stand up for freedom together and just really about all the accomplishments that we can all do together when we work hard together," Hummel said.
Morris College, Central Carolina Technical College and USC Sumter worked together to plan the event. It included a program and lunch in honor of Dr. King's legacy.
