SUMTER, S.C. — The Sumter community is mourning the loss of two well-known businessmen.
Billy McLeod and Carl Simpson passed away this week. McLeod was 93, while Simpson was 83.
McLeod started in the grocery store business 70 years ago, back in 1954. He was the owner of multiple Piggly Wiggly stores across the Midlands.
He was also in the cattle business and owned Black Crest Farms near Sumter.
Funeral services for McLeod will take place Saturday afternoon at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Sumter.
Simpson owned the Simpson Hardware Stores in Sumter. The city named him the Businessperson of the Year in 2002.
A graveside service for Simpson will take place this Sunday at the Evergreen Memorial Park.
