Driver killed in Monday night Sumter crash identified

Authorities said the victim was not wearing a seatbelt.

SUMTER, S.C. — A man has died following a late-night single-vehicle crash in Sumter County.

According to Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker, the crash happened on Mattison Avenue near Nash Street just after 10 p.m. Authorities said the vehicle left the roadway and hit a tree. 

The driver, later identified as 34-year-old Matthew Connolly 4th of Baldwin Drive, was rushed to Prisma Health Tuomey but died. Authorities said Connolly wasn't wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The coroner's office said an autopsy will be performed at the Medical University of South Carolina later in the week.

The Sumter Police Department is also investigating the crash.
