Police: Man who called 911 charged after alleged attempt to stab responding Sumter officer

Authorities said they met the caller outside. Officers said he lunged at one of them with a knife when approached.

SUMTER, S.C. — Sumter Police have arrested a man for allegedly attempting to stab an officer who he called to the location requesting help.

Police said officers responded to Gaines Road around 4 p.m. on Wednesday, where they were asked to remove someone from a home.

Outside, they found the caller and asked him about the reason for the call. That's when police said the man, 24-year-old Keith Undray Anderson Jr., pulled out a knife and lunged in an attempt to stab one of the officers. Authorities said the officer was able to maintain a safe distance from Anderson, who police say responded to commands to drop the knife.

The suspect was taken into custody and booked into the Sumter County Detention Center on a charge of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
