Two Sumter teens hospitalized after gun mishandling incident at Sumter Palmetto Inn

Sumter Police said the investigation is still very fluid.

SUMTER, S.C. — Two teens are in the hospital with critical injuries after a gun was reportedly mishandled and went off at a Sumter hotel.

According to preliminary details shared by the Sumter Police Department, officers were called to a hotel in the 200 block of North Washington Street around 10:45 a.m. -- the Sumter Palmetto Inn. They found an 18-year-old and a 16-year-old from Sumter inside a room with gunshot wounds. Both were taken to area hospitals.

Investigators believe the shooting was an isolated incident and the result of a gun being mishandled. Police said the investigation is still ongoing and fluid.
