One killed in Friday night crash in Sumter County

The crash involved only one vehicle. The driver was not injured but a passenger died, officials said.

SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. — A passenger has died following a Friday evening crash in Sumter County, officials say.

According to Lance Corporal Lena Butler with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash happened just before 8 p.m. on Dubois Siding Road near Adrian Circle north of Sumter. Butler said only one vehicle, a 2016 Chrysler 200, was involved.

Butler said the vehicle was traveling east on Dubose Siding Road when it left the road to the right, striking a ditch and a tree. Officials said the driver wasn't injured, but the passenger was airlifted to an area Prisma Health hospital, where they died.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash and deferred to the Sumter County Coroner's Office for information regarding the deceased victim.

Later on Saturday, the coroner identified the victim as 61-year-old Harold Rogers of Sumter. The coroner's office said Rogers was not wearing a seatbelt. An autopsy is scheduled at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston next week.
