Sumter County crash leaves one dead on Friday morning

Authorities said the car ran through a stop sign, crossed Wedgefield Road and hit a tree.

SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. — One person has died following a single-vehicle crash in Sumter County on Friday morning.

According to Master Trooper Gary Miller with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 2:30 a.m. on S.C. 763 (Wedgefield Road) at Keels Road. 

Miller said a 2016 Hyundai Sonata sedan was heading west on Keels Road and ran through a stop sign, crossing Wedgefield Road and hitting a tree. The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, died as a result of the crash. No other details were available regarding how the crash occurred.

The Sumter County Coroner's Office hasn't yet publicly released the identity of the victim.
