SUMTER, S.C. — After an outage on Saturday afternoon that initially left about 3,000 customers in the dark, power is back on in Sumter. However, another area is now experiencing issues.
Around 6:30 p.m., Sumter Police warned drivers that a power outage in the Crosswell area of the city is impacting traffic signals in the area of Oswego and Calhoun streets, Lafayette Drive and Main Street. Duke Energy outage maps showed large swaths of customers without power in Sumter and to the north of the city, but no cause is listed. The utility initially estimated the power would be restored by roughly 8:15 p.m. However, by 8 p.m., Sumter Police confirmed traffic lights were functional again, and power was back on.
While that outage has been resolved, another appeared later in the afternoon, stretching north from Elliott and impacting nearly 800 customers as far north as Lamar and Cypress Crossroads east of Bishopville. Duke Energy said a vehicle damaging utility equipment caused this outage. As of 10 p.m., those customers were still without power, and the repair estimate was midnight.
It's unclear if both outages are connected.
