SUMTER, S.C. — A Sumter woman is charged after her toddler was found wandering in a street, according to the Sumter Police Department.

Police say they were called after 5 a.m. when passersby spotted a small child crossing North Main Street. Officers began knocking on doors in the North Main/Stark streets area before finding the 2-year-old's home and mother.

An initial report indicates the mom, who was upstairs, left the child downstairs with a friend to watch when the child left the home undetected.

The state Department of Social Services was notified and the child placed with family members.

The mom, Emmani Kiana Wells, 24, of North Main Street, was taken into custody and charged with unlawful conduct toward a child.

The incident remains under investigation.
