Woman fires shots at intruder as he tries to break into her home, police say

A little after 7 a.m. on Thursday, a man tried to break into a Sumter woman's home; she shot at him and scared him away.

SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. — Police say a woman in Sumter heard breaking glass and realized someone was breaking into her home on Thursday morning.

Sumter Police said she got her gun and fired at him to scare him away around 7 a.m.

Surveillance video captured an image, which helped officers identify and find the suspect about 2-and-a-half hours later on Bultman Drive.

Christopher Adrian England, 28, was taken into custody and charged with first-degree burglary.

England was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center after being treated for a minor injury suffered during the break-in. Police said the investigation is ongoing.
