Free Thanksgiving meals in Orangeburg

A non-profit in Orangeburg hosted a giveaway for those who needed a holiday meal.

ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. — Mother’s Against Gun-Violence hosted a free Thanksgiving dinner giveaway Wednesday afternoon for the residents of Orangeburg at the Orangeburg County Library

Jaqueline Garrett from Mother’s Against Gun-Violence lost her son Joshua to gun violence.

Garrett hosted this event to give back to the community in memory of her son.

"I think it's going to bring them closer to the fact that they know someone cares enough to even give them something. It may not be a full turkey,” said Garrett. “But it is something to inspire people to have a little something of their own and say that OK you know somebody thought enough about me to just have me to come out and get something."

Heather Merritt says these free holiday meals impact many people in Orangeburg community.

"People that are elderly or unable to make meals I think this is very important to them because they can get out the house they can get a meal,” said Garrett. “And it may not be their Thanksgiving that they are used to but it’s still a warm meal and they still get some type of interaction with people. Interaction with people is so important."
