The music won't stop playing after tornado nearly takes out North Central high school

The tornado that touched down in Kershaw County nearly destroyed all of North Central High School, including the music that filled the hallways.

KERSHAW, S.C. — The tornado that touched down in Kershaw County on Saturday night nearly destroyed all of North Central High School, from classrooms to personal items to the music that filled the halls.

"As soon as I heard it happened, my first thought was instruments Wait, student instruments. Wait, the music." says Jonas Nix, who teaches music at North Central High.

Nix says some instruments are salvageable but many of the department's resources have been damaged or destroyed.

"We have percussion equipment, no electronic equipment. We have no music," says Nix.. "Local band directors have been awesome in offering their library and things like that, so we’re putting that together. As far as wind instruments, we’re going to figure that out."

But through it all, Nix says he has faith in the department and even more faith in the students. "I couldn’t wait to see these kids, and I knew that when they came in and saw this space, their mind was going to go straight to this awesome 'let’s make it work' and they did," says Nix.
