Three Irmo High Girl wrestlers made history earlier this month.
Irmo High students Mya'ah Vincent, Jaliyah Sanders, and Sydney Bostic placed in the top five at the 2020 Carolina Invitational, becoming the school's first female wrestlers to place in a State Championship competition.
Vincent, a sophomore at the school, placed first in the tournament, becoming the school's first female State Champion wrestler. Sanders placed third and Bostic placed fourth.
"It's exciting especially to know that, it's not just a boys thing, it could be a girls thing too." Vincent said.
Bostic, who is also a Sophomore, says she's happy to see the growth in Girls wrestling.
"My sister wrestled when she was in school and she was one of the few girls that wrestled," Bostic says. "It's nice to see that more females are interested in wrestling and want to try to do it."
Nicholas Wilcox, who is an Assistant Coach on team,is excited about the team's future and the growth of Girls Wresting in the state.
"Maybe other girls will look at them as an inspiration, which will help our program grow and really help the sport of women's wrestling grow." Wilcox said.
