Lugoff-Elgin teachers open 'The Caring Closet' for students in need of various items

The closet holds feminine products, hygiene items, clothes, and more.

KERSHAW COUNTY, S.C. —  Inside classroom 510 at Lugoff-Elgin High School, you will find two dedicated teachers: Marnie Melton and Carie Knight.

They hope to positively impact their students with “The Caring Closet” by providing essential items to students in need.

“We have toothbrushes, toothpaste like she mentioned, tampons, pads, deodorant, hairbrushes, shampoo, conditioner,” said Melton.

Knight developed the concept and noticed a need for these items in her classroom.

“Some of these kids are coming, and they just don’t have access to the hygiene, and I don’t want any child to be embarrassed to be at school,” Knight said.

As they organize toothbrushes, shirts, and more, they aim to eliminate the stigma surrounding these essential supplies by providing special bags for students.

“I feel like the kids who really need it are still a little embarrassed and will just kind of whisper to me, so it depends on the child,” Melton said.

The items come from community donations and are available to all students and teachers in the classroom. However, they want to see it grow in all schools.

“If we could spread this all over South Carolina, that would be absolutely wonderful,” Melton said.

They are accepting donations from the community.
