Sumter County, SC (WLTX) - One hundred years ago the Sumter County fair opened its doors for the first time. Today they are still up and running with new attractions, food and fun of the entire family.
Every year the American Legion hosts the fair, with proceeds benefiting veterans in the area.
"This is something we've been looking forward to for several years now,” says fair manager Mel Curtis.
The newest attraction, helicopter rides provided by Carolina Helicopters.
Ginger Perkins says this is her first time riding.
"It wasn't long enough, but it was all good,” says Perkins.
Gilbert Anderson was reminded of his three tours serving in Vietnam.
"I loved it,” says Anderson. “I loved it. It ain't a Huey, but it'll do."
Thirty rides and more than 30 vendors make up this year's festivities, with fair favorites like caramel apples, turkey legs, a petting zoo, and no fair would be complete without a Ferris wheel.
Curtis says that’s his favorite ride.
"I feel like I'm safe,” says Curtis. “No danger here. Some of those others down there that you don't know which way you're going, I don't know which way my food is going either so I don't like riding those."
The Ferris wheel has been a staple at the fair for as long as he can remember. With a total expectancy of more than 30,000 people, Curtis hopes everyone walking through the gates will be able to take home memories that can last for another century.
This year’s fair runs until October 2nd.
