Man dies five days after collision involving Sumter County patrol vehicle

Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker said 62-year-old Hercules Sharper was hit around 5 p.m. on June 21.

SUMTER, S.C. — A man has died days after being struck in a collision that involved a Sumter County Sheriff's patrol vehicle.

Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker said 62-year-old Hercules Sharper of Sumter was hit around 5 p.m. back on June 21. He was taken to Prisma Health Tuomey for treatment and then transferred to Prisma Health Richland in Columbia, where he died on June 26.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.

According to South Carolina Highway Patrol, the patrol vehicle was traveling down South Lafayette Street in Sumter. At the same time, Sharper and another person were standing off the roadway near a car.

Troopers say the sheriff's SUV suddenly lost control and struck a utility pole, then hit the car that was parked off the road. The parked car and the pole then struck Sharper.

The deputy in the patrol car, as well as the other person who was standing near Sharper, also received injuries. Both were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The collision remains under investigation.
