SLED: Sumter police officer used position to offer women money for sex

Agents said he used his position as a police officer to get women's phone numbers.

SUMTER, S.C. — A now-former Sumter Police officer is being accused of using his position to get women to have sex with him for money.

South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) said Wednesday that 30-year-old Darren Lee McCain is charged with misconduct in office and has been booked at the Sumter County Detention Center.

According to a warrant released by SLED, the alleged incidents occurred over two years between January 24, 2022, and April 16, 2024. Agents said McCain was serving as a Sumter Police officer at the time and, through his official capacity, was able to get the phone numbers of multiple women. They said he then used the phone numbers to contact the women and offer them money in exchange for sex.

Agents said they found evidence on McCain's cell phone that connected him to the claims.

The Sumter Police Department had requested that SLED be brought in to investigate the allegations against McCain. The Third Circuit Solicitor's Office will prosecute the case.
