Motorcycle rider killed in crash with car in West Columbia

The collision took place Sunday afternoon along the busy roadway.

WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. — West Columbia police have charged a woman in connection to a crash that killed a person riding a motorcycle.

Officers arrested 66-year-old Phyllis Loretta Childs on a charge of felony DUI resulting in death.

According to police, the collision took place around 4:20 p.m. Sunday in the 400 block of Sunset Boulevard. The Lexington County Coroner's Office said Jose Antonio Colon, 59, was traveling south on Sunset Boulevard when a vehicle turned in front of him. Coroner Margaret Fisher said Colon was taken to the hospital where he later died. Child was not hurt.

Police stated in an incident report that Child's car, which was the other vehicle in the crash, had heavy damage on the side.

The incident report also states they gave Childs a field sobriety test and they believed her abilities to drive were impaired. She was taken to the jail where she was ultimately charged.

Online jail records show a judge denied bond for her until a general sessions court judge can set the bond.

The Lexington County Coroner’s Office and West Columbia Police Department continue to investigate the incident.
